Let's hope history properly records the reason Reagan was so great: His persona, his essence, the charactor that he was. When Gorby tried to stare him down, Reagan didn't blink. Why? SDI? We were probably no closer to SDI then the Soviet's were but we had Reagan, his chutzpa and his Americanism. That can do spirit of success that seperates us from virtually everyone else( and is the cause of much of the jealousy).
I voted for Reagan in 1980 which was the first presidential election in which I was old enough to do so. Needless to say in 84 as well. Not because I followed politics or for that matter knew much about the issues like today, but because of the feeling the guy gave you. Whether it was Gorby at Iceland or the air-traffic controllers or the democratic congress, the man got his way.
Of course tax cuts stimulate and grow the economic(and therefore the tax) base. Of course we need a strong defense. Of course we should have pride in our great country. But without Ronald Reagan we may have never found our way back.
Rest in peace Gipper, a grateful nation mourns.
