China Update – Shanghai
I finally got back on the Internet today. But I still haven’t been able to get my laptop online so no pictures (yet).
Halloween came and went and no one seemed to care here.
Two days ago we flew from Guangzhou to Shanghai. Very big ultra modern airport. One of our agents is Tiger and his office is in Shanghai and he was a wonderful host. The first night we had a great dinner. After a few Chinese beers Jennifer started a charades game, so we had to give clues to our teammates who didn’t speak each others’ language — it was a blast. Then we played rock paper scissors, which apparently is a truly universal game. (Shirley, our Atlanta partner who is from near Shanghai won, which was suprising because I am very hard to beat at that game.)
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to go to the downtown area and see everything. Yesterday, we spent all day at one of the factories that makes some of our candles. Very interesting. We spent the whole day planning and giving instructions for new products. In a few months our product line of wholesale wedding favors will go from about 15 products to over 60.
It is amazing how inexpensive you can get things here. For example, all the offices we’ve been in have desks that would cost several thousand dollars n the U.S. that they got from one of the factories for a few hundred bucks. Jennifer and I are planning to load up on furniture when we have some extra space in one of the containers.
Today is our last day here and we are in Zhejiang (about an hour from Shanghai) touring more factories and meeting with the place that does our printing. Tonight we fly back and tomorrow I can start getting caught up on 2,000 emails. If you tried emailing me, sorry, I haven’t been able to get my email all week. It’s been weird not being on email for that long…

Fantastic to see you are making headway there.

The furniture are really cheap there, but be careful for the different humility in the different region. Some time the furniture will crack or glue will loose when they are used in America, usually piano finished type will seal better for wood furniture.

Hey Brad,
I was at Shanghai and Zhejiang 3 weeks ago! The Bund in Shanghai was very crowded ya? Remember not to miss the West Lake. I am sure Jennifer will love it. It is beautiful. Oh yes, don’t miss the DongPoRou (very nice Pork dish) at Lou Wai Lou restaurant which is also near West Lake. Enjoy your trip!

Brad -
Several years ago I got the chance to visit Kunshan as well as Shanghai for the first time. In Kunshan I thought everyone was going to be dressed like Mao and trodding behind oxen.
Instead most of the people were wearing very western clothes like Polo shirts, jeans, and colorful sweaters. I saw modern shopping malls, fancy bakeries, people driving Camrys, pretty much what you’d find here in the US. I even had coffee in a trendy bistro while they played Michael Bolton *gaah* music. (As it turns out, I think most of the businesses were owned by the Taiwanese…)
The dimsum was excellent — no surprise — although eating it for breakfast was a bit rich (in grease) my stomach that early in the morning. Stick to the Congee if you need something more bland for breakfast.
Sure, it wasn’t all modern. In fact, most of it is still undeveloped and fairly agrarian. Overall it was a great eye-opener, though, as I’m sure you are discovering.
Now that you’re finding the furniture so cheap maybe we’ll be seeing http://www.myweddingfurniture.com?
Enjoy the trip and take lots of pictures.

Nice to have you back, Brad.
I’ve never been to China but a trip I made almost a decade ago to Singapore sure was a long one! Hope you get over the jet lag soon.

China is becoming the center of world manufacturing, including furniture. The low prices and high quality of labor are key. Having a fixed currency exchange rate also helps keep things inexpensive. It reminds me of Japan in the 70′s.
Have a safe trip home.

Mark

Well, I think there is a general idea that China, being a communist country, is all bad and evil. Having lived here on and off for the last 5 years, I can attest to the fact that perhaps (at the risk of sounding unpatriotic) this is a better place to live, then the USA. I find it much safer, more peaceful and easier to get along with people. While it is not secret that many things are “controlled” it is a far cry from what we were told this place was all about.

China has definitely become the manufacturing hotspot. Over half the products we deal with come from China. Hope to be able to take a business trip there soon.

I am very motivated by how you and Jennifer are growing your business. Being able to grow your company in the states while also having the ability to go overseas to shop for the most competitive prices is really teaching me alot. Your experience is very encouraging.

Your trip sounds great. We do business in Shanghai and have gotten there 7 times in the past few years. It is always changing.
If you are there again go to O’Malley’s Irish Pub-it’s real kick. The first time we went there the Finnish club was having a meeting and my wife is of Finnish extraction-so we were at a Finnish meeting in an Irish pub in Shanghai.
That’s cultural exchange.
Brad,

Have a great trip back from China. My wife and I visited China in 1996. It is a completely different country now.
Enjoy your trip back.
China is the new India when it comes to outsourcing … cheaper, but still just as skilled.
China would be real interesting to visit. How do you communicate with suppliers when you are there or do many business people speak english. Harry

Brad – you can start making infoproducts about how to import stuff directly from China…
Do you have any tips on where to locate Chinese exporters of various stuff? Where did you find your business partners?
Also, are there any hurdles when it comes to bureaucracy or do the shipping companies take care of all documents etc?

Hey Brad,
Isn’t China wonderful. I’ve been looking at importing some things from there, but it is a bit overwhelming to get started. Glad to know you had a good time. Can’t wait to hear more updates about the trip.
Brad, do you know anything about getting good SEO results in other languages? Did you do any SEO research on Chinese?
My 17 year old nephew is about to go to college…I told him to learn about traffic generation, he’ll have 100% employment when he gets out.
Brad,
Hope China was as beneficial as you hoped.

Hello fellow Stompers!
I have been stomping for quite some time now, and I am at the point where I am trading links fairly heavily, but as many of you may know, it is abit harder than it seems. If anyone here is interested in exchanging links with four or five websites, please send me an email (link-request@ondemandmerchandise.com), or just go to my Wholesale Source Partners page and fill in your information. I do not want everyone to reply here, as Brad’s blog is not an “official link exchange”.
After entering your information you will notice there there are other sites that you can also exchange links with. Please create a reciprocal link to each of the websites first, then submit your information.
I have been strugling with a way to contact each of the stompers to trade links with them, because I have been searching for people that understand the link exchanging process, and that is harder than it may seem. If you see this information and know of anyone that might also be interested in exchanging links, please let pass my information on to them.
Thanks and keep stomping …

Hey Brad,
My daughter had a chance to go to China this past Spring on an International Mission of Diplomacy and thoroughly enjoyed it. She flew into Bejing for a week then on to X’ian and Shanghai before returning to the states. My wife would have loved to have gone along as she has studied Chinese language (Mandarin) and literature at the graduate level but never actually got to travel to China.
The one caution I would give you though is to try to be sure that the products you are purchasing from China are not produced by their “slave prison” labor camps.
Wishing you all the best.

China is also a beautiful place, with winter in the north and tropical in the south. Its certainly a nice place to visit if you like to travel.

I’ve been thinking about the differences between China and the US recently and I thought I would share this with you:
My girlfriend just told me a story about growing up in rural Henan, China. She said that while growing up in the 1970′s and 80′s, her family had no electricity, no toys, no car, no phone, no indoor plumbing, and a dirt floor. As a child, she never saw a building over two stories tall. Meat, apples, oranges, bananas, and eggs were rare treats. She said some people went six months without washing because there was no hot water in the winter! She was 26 years old the first time she went to the dentist. She has never used deodorant, jewelry, perfume, make-up, breath mints, or shaved her underarms. I introduced her to salads, jelly, and cereal, but she didn’t care for them.
In contrast, I grew up in the American Midwest in a “typical”
working-class, small-town family. My parents told me that we were poor, but we had a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath ranch house with a garage, basement, wall-to-wall carpet, swingset, sandbox, large yard, a boat, motorcycle,
blender, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, mixer, toaster, microwave, TV, drill, power saw, gun, refrigerator, oven,
toys, lawnmower, phone, Christmas/Easter/Thanksgiving decorations, two sets of dishes, birthday gifts, a truck,
a small vacation house, and a car. I never went one day without taking a shower or a bath and eating three meals. I went to the doctor for checkups and saw a dentist every six months. We went to chuch every week. I almost never ate rice
and when I did, it was Minute Rice.
Her story made me think that anyone who was born in a developed country should thank their lucky stars. It just blows my mind to think that China was against everything that West thought was good. Education,
birth control, capitalism, religion, democracy, free speech, free choice, and freedom of movement was forbidden.
Although China still has a lot of problems with corruption, racism, poverty, education, copyright theft, justice, healthcare, welfare, overpopulation, banking, reliable statistics, religion, speech, democracy, crime, credit reporting, hygiene, and other things, I must admit China, however, does the following
things better than the USA:
1. Mobile phones are pay as you go, cheaper, and more people have them in China
2. DVD use
3. Living expenses are cheaper
4. No babysitters
5. Less sales/income/property tax hassles
6. Public transportation
7. Coinless public phones
8. Journalism is more upbeat here
9. Booming economy
10. Very few lawsuits
11. Few divorces
12. Little personal debt
13. Thin girls
14. Banks are open seven days a week
There are more good sides to China, but that’s all that come to mind right now.
Comments welcome.
Now that we have a handle on optimizing how about some pointers on building traffic?
I need your reply
Brad, did you suffer much jet lag, stiff neck, trouble sleeping etc on either side of the trip? Did you take any supplements or do any “tricks” to handle the jetlag?
I really appreciate blogs like this one becuase it is insightful and helps me communicate with others.
