Secret Google Documents
Fun Stuff: The San Francisco Chronicle obtained an internal Google document discussing Google’s own forecasts for Search customers and revenue over the next several years.
Not surprisingly, the documents forecasts slowing growth in the number of advertisers as well as rising bid prices.

Hi Brad, I know you’re a busy guy but…
I bought Stomping the Search Engines Tuesday, October 19, 2004. 5:50:14 and my order id is 5844268 and I have been reading the transscripts. I have to say it is very good indeed.
I was just wondering when I was going to get a link to my sex toys site on the http://www.bradfallon.com page. I’ve emailed two or three times…
Best Regards
Lyndon
Sorry Brad, I meant the http://www.bradfallon.com/mission/ page.
Regards
Lyndon
It sound to me like more and more companies are
using Google add words to promote their business on Google, why not hire someone
like you Brad to do the work for them. The initial investment is small in
comparison to the amount of free traffic they can get from Google and the other
search engines.

Hi Brad,
Glad you’re home safe and sound. Hope your trip to China was productive and ultimately good for your business.
I am in the same situation as Lyndon, having sent multiple emails regarding a link to your links page. Actually there were three links added to the page before you left and after I had sent my first email, so I ‘m assuming you have a backlog of us buyers who are also waiting.
Dealing with Google is a real frustration. I’ve gotten some really good rankings with Yahoo – within weeks of instituting some of the changes and procedures you’ve recommended.
Although I’m getting spidered almost daily by the Googlebot, the indexing just isn’t happening. I’ve gotten listed on DMOZ (I’m an editor there) and the backling from them doesn’t even show up on my cached homepage after a month. I’ve gotten a number of PR 5 and 6 links to my site as well – same thing. Have a good site map, but only a few of my pages have been indexed so far. again, the site is being spidered frequently.
Anybody else having the same results? How about some other members wanting to do some reciprocal linking – I’m looking for Google traffic, because my Yahoo listings haven’t produced much. My next goals are to get a couple of news releases out and start a weekly article submission program. Perhaps that’ll be the extra kick I need in order to see some Google action.

If the forcast proves to be ture, and I don’t see why it would go any other way. How long before PPC marketing is not profitable. Some of our keywords in the last six months have become too expensive for the product to justify. Yet people selling the same thing from the same dropshipper still bid extremely high.

Hey Brad,
Please contact me regarding Top10 results.
Thanks!
What has always bothered me is that big ‘players’ like nextag and ebay have always seemed to be able to get around relevancy rules using some kind of run of site system that lets their ads come up for almost any search. I have ads in markets where my only competitors are ebay and nextag, and the ads they have are only VERY VERY VERY tenously related (if at all) to the market. I imagine this kind of thing will continue and/or grow.

As the profits from some of my sites are largely from Google Adsense I have no problem with adsense costs rising..
For anyone who relies on Adsense a lot, I would suggest that the fact they are here means they already have the bets solution, get STOMPing to reduce the need for ppc ads!
I’ve managed to halve my ppc advertising costs over the last few months, without reducing my profits.

Hi Brad,
Welcome back… I know how swamped you must be catching up on emails and such, but I, like Lyndon & Scott, am a stomper and have sent multiple link requests to the email on the http://www.bradfallon.com/mission/ site and have never heard back or been included on that page.

john,
i have bought a copy. there are many ways to use it depending on your personal situation. it is a timesaver and great for link building if that is what you are looking for. the page rank feature is an additional add on ($49) in addition to the basic optilink purchase.
i would use it intensively for about a week and then move on to getting my site ‘stomped’ .

Hi Brad,
Welcome back, how was your trip? Anyway, I would like to address a problem that I’ve been having with your blog here. It keep saying “comment could not be submitted due to questionable content buying-a-foreclosures.com . I used to be able to post my blog with my textlink at the bottom. For some reason it wont let me do that lately. Im wondering if you have put my textlink on a block? I don’t know if there’s anything I posted sometime earlier that resulted to this. Thanks.

Thanks for the link to the Google article, very interesting reading. More ad accounts and higher bid prices is great news for us Stompers who don’t rely on PPC traffic, because it means more cash from AdSense! This is welcome indeed, because just lately the average daily CPM has been all over the place.

In answer to John’s (Japanese Katana Samurai Swords) question about OptiLink. I use it all the time on Bionic Tonic, my sex toys site. It’s a great tool for finding high ranking sites to exchange links with. I’ve got the full version that gets Google Page Rank and Alexa etc. I would not be without it. Another related bit of software is OptiSite (equally excellent) but thats another story…
thank you for all the comments about optilink. I’ll probably get it. What is the pagerank feature though? I didn’t read anything about that on the site.
Thank you again,

Just wondered if you could add my link to your mission page on your site. I have snet two or three emails to you but also appreciste you are a busy boy.

I’m assuming that when Microsoft’s new search is up that they’ll be adding their own PPC either at that point or eventually. That should help with the advertiser PPC costs. PPC costs are getting high on quite a few terms. Anyone remember when they were mostly 1 or 2 cents per click?
But PPC works really well for many.

If the recent report about 50% of click thru’s being fraudulent is true, it’s understandable that ad revenue expected to drop – as the companies paying for the clicks will be seeing lower conversions.
It wouldn’t be too difficult to read the said report about click fraud and conclude that ad revenue will take a plunge.

Affiliate Marketing Tips
Hey guys. Concerning optilink and seoelite. It seems like seoelite is a better product. I’m specifically thinking of the feature to check on your linking partners. Is there any feature that Optilink has that SeoElite doesn’t? Also, does anyone know about the book he also gives you with the software. The author sells it for $79 on his site but you get it free with SeoElite. I want to go with the best one, but I can’t afford both.
Any thoughts would be appreciated,
John
Brad, do you much about the new MSN search engine coming out next year? Anyone have tips to plan ahead for SEO for such a major player? I heard that MSN will take 1/3 of the search marketshare within 12-18 months…
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure Brad says that all the pages linked to a grouping page will get an equal portion of it’s page rank. Eg If A is the Group Page and pages B,C and D are linked only to it, then pages B,C and D should get the same page rank all things being equal.
Now, I agree the setup on Bionic Tonic, my sex toys is not quite so simple but I have noticed that the first few products on a product group page get a higher pagerank than those lower down. So, periodically I move say the first three products to the end
My question is, has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?
Regards
Lyndon
It’s scary to think about where Google and other search engines might be in five years. Does anyone else worry about this? The number of pages indexed by the search engines is growing so rapidly, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve high rankings. As more people (and companies) learn the value of organic search engine rankings, it’s only going to get tougher out there. There are 3 things that scare me about Google, and I’m sure many of the individuals posting here have thought of this too:
1) increasing number of pages on the net = more competition
2) growing knowledge of SEO by webmasters = more competition
3) Google’s new priority will be to satisfy shareholders by increasing ad revenue…will organic listings take a back seat?
With so many pages competing on the next for top spots, won’t google eventually have to re-organize it’s index in some way. If 5 years from now there are 50 billion pages competing for a given search term and only 10 results can be displayed on teh first page, how good will you have to be attain one of those coveted top 10 spots??
If anyone has any thoughts on this or links to articles on this topic, that would be cool.

Hey Brad,
I am glad that you are back home and safe from your visit in China. It looks like that Google’s number of advertisers is only going to increase in the next few years. That is great for Google, but will also bring more competition to the table, which I believe will encourage people to stive more toward free search traffic!

The cpc’s are already getting out of hand. I don’t understand how some of these companies are making any money. Their conversion rates must be very high. From the looks of some of the websites who are bidding into the top spots, I find this hard to believe.

Yea, as number of advertisers increase there are sure to me more jumping into the PPC. There is already FindWhat.com and DomainSponsor.com and a few others that I’ve seen. But Overture and Google are the biggest. And MSN will probably be adding it with their new directory, I would think?
It will be interesting to watch it play out. Andre, if you didn’t know about these other two I mentioned, you might check out their prices and try a little bit of $ on them. (DomainSponsor.com, I think is the better of those two) I’ve used FindWhat.com in addition to Overture, but I’m going to try DomainSponsor.com as I’m hearing good things about them as far as service.

Hi
There seems to be so much that can be done so much advice. From Google increasing prices and the whole advert thing to linking . Swapping articles, generating blogs etc etc.
At times to know where to start is the difficult problem. As a previous comment I have tried getting as many links as possible and yet things just are not happening in google or yahoo. So where to turn to next. The sales copy is another area of frustration, load the page with benefits, and then nothing happens either.
It is a wild wooly world out there on the net.

I have a Google mystery on my hands. My site isn’t coming up in google. I was able to find a page though by searching for my domain. I clicked on the cache and it says that it was last cached on Dec. 31 1969!!!!!

Any ideas on what is going on? Have I been banned? The only thing that I can think of that could have got me banned was I had multiple domains names pointing at my main domain. This was before I knew this was bad. I bought them because I was testing CTR’s of different domain names on Google Adwords.
Cached in 1969 Google was on the internet before the rests of us every heard of an internet! lol
Anybody heard when the new MSN goes up? I got an email today an internet marketers newsletter I’m on that said it was announced by Reuters. But when I went to Reuters and did a search I didn’t find anything about it.
I noticed it was up at their prelaunch place, but when I went back 10 minutes later it was down. I didn’t see any announcements on their page while I was there.
By the way, Andre, I need some of your Pet Stain stuff. I had your webpage printed off with your phone number to call and order, but it must be under a stack of papers on my desk as I can’t find it. Soon as I find it I’ll call you

Hi Brad
I’ve been following your instructions as per stomping the search engines cd’s and also looking at how myweddingfavors is set up. I’m about to add my first sub domain and I’m wondering if the links that will be pointing back to me should be pointed at http://www.rental-car-in-new-zealand.com or http://subdomain.rental-car-in-new-zealand.com I can’t find any specific mention of this on disc 3 or 4 and would appreciate your advice.
My site is travel related and 90% of the sites I link to have a form to fill out where I supply the information including the url of the site I want the link to point at.
The following is what raised this question and is from an article that appeared in SitePro News a couple of days ago and was written by Phil Craven “Wherever you get them, make sure that their link text is the search term that you are targeting, and that each link points to the page you are promoting for the particular search term. Pointing all the links to your home page, with various target search terms, won’t achieve the same as pointing targeted links at specific pages within the site.”
I bought Stomping the Search Engines in October and they were delivered in under five days and I live in a rural area 105 klms from the nearest city in Queensland Australia. That is impressive.

Mike O’Brien
It’s funny, I bought stomping the search engines listened to it. Then posted a messages on the Brad’s blog, just like the CDs suggested. I also requested a link to myweddingfavors.com. I recieved an e-mail back stating my link would be added….. Wrong!!!!!!!! I went back to Brad’s blog a couple of days later and my comment had been removed. When I try to add a new comment, I get a error saying there is questionable content on my site. Also, I checked back on the myweddingfavors.com site and my link was never placed. I don’t know what’s questionable about my site. Someone help please. My site is turn2sportswear dot com.
Your having this problem because Brad or someone must have noticed that your links pages does not pass pagerank on to whatever sites your linking to. It looks like you have somekind of system running your links exchanges, is that correct. Go to page 50-51 of the stomper resource pdf and it talks about the issue of why some pages don’t pass page rank. It’s the part that talks about the “?” being in the address of the page. I’d bet anything this is why their giving you problems.
Good luck,
John
we should change the topic – it’s no longer google documents!
as for turn2sportswear dot com, your ‘link exchange’ section hyperlinks violates page rank passing. your ‘links’ section however is fine.
nick
this makes SEO even more important. Prices for competitive keywords are already extremely high so if you want to generate a nice ROI, SEO is the future!
I read this article when it first came out. While it does seem that the competition is heating up with regard to traditional search engine marketing due to the popular exposure. I am wondering where the new ground is being broken.
Specifically, are any people studying and researching Blog user search patterns and where does it appear on the pay per click marketing horizon… any thoughts?

The article definitely makes you think twice about PPC. When your starting out, the budget does not allow much on the string. Thanks for the forecast.
I’m also a Stomper and have recently tried to use the Overture Search Engine keyword suggestion tool. No matter what I enter, it comes back with “No Suggestions”. I thought maybe there was some problem with it so came back a few days later and same result.
I have an Overture account so I tried using the keyword suggestion tool from inside my account and it works fine. Anyone else noticed this?

I have stopped ALL my PPC marketing. I know, I know, all the “experts” say to keep the PPC’s going… but I was going thru a month’s PPC marketing budget in a matter of hours!
My main keywords are high competitors, so I have been doing the “Stomp” to get my site listed “organically” and put my marketing $$ elsewhere.
I know many wouldn’t agree w/stopping the PPC’s, but I’ve seen clear evidence of the “stomping” and watched my site climb over the last 2 months or so… so I’m going to keep at it and save the $$ for now.
I look forward to the Stomping Ground whenever that happens…

A comment to the people stopping PPC. Agree this is a smart thing to do if your site is not converting well enough for you to make a profit on your PPC links, but don’t let that be an excuse for you to stop working on your conversion!! When you do get the SEO results you want, you’ll really reap the benefits.
Hello fellow Stompers!
I have been stomping for quite some time now, and I am at the point where I am trading links fairly heavily, but as many of you may know, it is abit harder than it seems. If anyone here is interested in exchanging links with four or five websites, please send me an email (link-request@ondemandmerchandise.com), or just go to my Wholesale Source Partners page and fill in your information. I do not want everyone to reply here, as Brad’s blog is not an “official link exchange”.
After entering your information you will notice there there are other sites that you can also exchange links with. Please create a reciprocal link to each of the websites first, then submit your information.
I have been strugling with a way to contact each of the stompers to trade links with them, because I have been searching for people that understand the link exchanging process, and that is harder than it may seem. If you see this information and know of anyone that might also be interested in exchanging links, please let pass my information on to them.
Thanks and keep stomping …

Brad,
I recently purchased your Stomping the Search Engine cd set. I wanted to say thanks, the package it is awesome!
I read through this article, and I found it very interesting! I’m a little surprised by the concern that the “rate” of growth is slowing. Obviously, as companies grow their ability to let’s say grow at a certain rate decreases as their size grows. This is normal. It doesn’t really speak to the issue of the whether or not they are still strong in their niche or whether they’re still commanding eyeballs as the case may be.
Google’s relative success will be derived from their ability to out perform their competition which in turn will drive new advertising revenue (possibly taken directly from their competitor.
Anyway, rate seems a like a weak measure to me…
Just my $.02
Kudos again on STSE.

I have been playing with Link Explore for a little while now and have the following observations:
It definitely is not the same sort of tool as Zeus, Arelis or even Reciprocal Manager for that matter. It is a collective of people (site owners, webmasters, etc.) who are all interested in finding linking partners.
I am about to start submitting requests to the lengthy list of potential partners I have generated using Link Explore and would be happy to share with you (all) how it goes.
There are a ton of sites touting PR5 rankings as well as a number with higher rankings. What will be interesting is to see with whom they are interested in exchanging links.
Frankly, Sumantra has a good thing going in that product as he gets his monthly $$ and in theory everyone else gets what they are looking for.
Welcome back Brad. I hope you are able to uncover your desk soon.

Sam

Hi Brad,
I am listening to your Stomping the Search Engine cd set and learning a lot. I have a question – Do affiliate links (like the one you use for your Yahoo store) count as back links?

I made a huge mistake on AdWords and it cost me $2K. Uggghhh.
They are definitely making it really expensive.

OUCH! I’m certainly not an Adwords expert by any means, but isn’t that why you should limit your daily budget to a fixed amount (depending on how deep are your pockets)? So things don’t get out of hand?
This is precisely why I don’t do Adwords. I’d be a nervous wreck.
So, I just keep on Stompin’!

Brad,
You ARE a busy man! Glad to see you are so successfully busy with all of your projects. I submitted my site for your mission page originally over a month ago, and a few times since then. Let me know if I should resubmit it. We are actively getting links, many haven’t shown up and our PR is STILL 0!!! I don’t get it? Help! Anyone!

I reply to John’s post from above, you really can’t trust Google for backlink information. Because if you could trust their numbers to be correct, it would be too easy to figure our their algorithm over time by performing specific tests.

Concerning ADWords there is a great eBook by Perry Marshall, that will not let you make a 2K mistake. Anybody using OptiLink?? Good Luck Stompers.

Thanks for the response everyone! I have another question.. its a newbie question. Where can I find free info on starting a blog on my site. I sort of understand a blog, but I sort of don’t. (i know i’m in one right now, lol )
I really want to know how do you obtain targeted traffic from the blogs, and why people are saying that blogs rank really well on google. ( and understand )
Any inputs would be great, thanks!

Jon,
I just had a movable type blog set up for free at http://www.livingdot.com . Great customer service and they had it set up in about a half hour of when I placed the order. Free domain name too.
Also I highly recommend Perry Marshall’s adwords book. All of Perry’s material for that matter. I met him in person for a consulting session since he only lives about 20 minutes from me and he knows his stuff. Especially B2B and technical sales (which I’m in), but his adwords book is a must have if your doing it.
Jon,
You might also want to check out this site for how to set up movable type. It seems somewhat complicated to me. I didn’t think it was worth spending hours figuring out, so that’s why I went with livingdot.com when I saw they had free installation.

According to a SEO newsletter I subscribe too Google didn’t update PR from June until mid October. So unfortunately there’s not a lot you can do until they update it again except to keep on getting as many reciprocal links as you can. Brad or someone else may have more info on this.
Anyone else notice that a target=”_blank” gets blocked by Google pop up blocker? Although I just downloaded Alexa toolbar for first time, so maybe this is affecting it? But it says the block comes from Google toolbar. Hmmm
I HOPE that this is not a new Google thing as I want all links on both my links pages and from my regular pages to open in a new window so that I’m not losing traffic.
Anyone have any feedback on this?

Hi all!
I am getting ready to launch my 1st site. Curious about link strategy. Seems like it would take forever to get linked by manually soliciting. Any one use an automated system and if so anyone have any recommendations. It seems to me that getting a significant amount of links is a challenge for quite a few an maybe not for others? For those that are doing this right, what is your advice to the rest of us. Thanks!
At this time I don’t plan on advertising on Google. I’m going to try Froogle, which is free, before leaping into this arena. I need to keep my costs down as a start-up.

I have encountered some people that are concerned with link relevance. I thought I remember Brad saying that it didn’t matter, but that Google may be moving toward making relevant links “count more”. Anyone else remember this?

Hi all,
I have been reading posts on small business & SEO forums and they all seem to think that links that are revelant to your site are better for your SE ranking…. Google is so slow and doesn’t always list all the links, so it’s hard to second guess it or figure it out… so I say, keep stomping, get revelant links and stay the course and the results will come – even on/Google.

Hi fellow Stompers,
I have found this great resource for links. It is an ad coop network for free, done by the same people who do the keyword ranking tool (Digital Point).
You put a text ad on your page, and depending on how many pages your site has and its PR, your ads appear on the pages of other network members. You can put up to 5 ads on a page, and thereby multiply your own “weight” in the network.
I have to tell you, after working hard for months and months to raise my ranking on “christian books” (which is a very competitive keyword), I went from obscurity to 12 on G in just 5 days! And, just to mix up my anchor text, I put in “christian book distributors” and I ended up nowhere to #3. (I didn’t even have that as a keyword on my home page — Brad is right, it’s all about anchor text in backlinks). My case may be unique, I have a lot of pages on my site, and I get spidered everyday, but I was shocked!
You can try it out here: Ad Coop Network. I don’t get any money (it’s a free network), but if you use my link I do get a little more weight in the network. If you don’t want to use my link, just go to Digital Point’s ad network.
Let me know what you think!

Hello Stacy,
I am a fellow stomper currently enrolled in Brad and Andy’s apprentice program. I would like to talk to you about this kind of advertising, and if it looks good, I will pass your url to all of the members in our private ‘stomper’ forum.
I do not want to give out my email here, so please just shoot over to my website and send a messgae from there if you don’t mind, with your contact information.
I would be greatly apprecative if you did.

Brad,
Check this out:
Google Toolbar PageRank only for entertainment purposes?
Last week, two statements about Google’s PageRank started a new discussion about this topic.
The first statement was made in the Search Engine Watch forums. It was from a person who received the following answer to a PageRank question from a Google employee:
“The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only.
Due to repeated attempts by hackers to access this data, Google updates the PageRank data very infrequently because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is several months old.
If the toolbar is showing a PR of zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasn’t been updated in the last update.
The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero.
If a site is showing up in the search results, it doesn’t not have a real PR of zero, the Toolbar is just out of date”
In another forum, a person with the name GoogleGuy, who is believed to a Google employee, made the following statement:
“I’d strongly disagree with the statement that the toolbar PageRank is for ‘entertainment purposes only’–millions of toolbar users use the PageRank display to judge the quality of pages.
I think it’s also a little irresponsible to quote John Galt claiming to talk to some random person at Google, and then for you to quote it as a response from Google, which makes it sound more official. I’m happy to refute that this is any sort of official stance.”
GoogleGuy didn’t say that the comments in the first statement are wrong. He said that toolbar users use the PageRank display to judge the quality of web pages. He did not say that Google uses the number of the PageRank toolbar to rank web pages.
The PageRank feature is also no longer mentioned in the official Google toolbar tour.
What does this mean to you?
Of course, PageRank is important to get good rankings on Google. However, the PageRank number that is displayed in the Google Toolbar and the green PageRank bar are not important at all for good Google rankings.
It’s very likely that the PageRank number that can be seen in the Google Toolbar is mainly a marketing instrument for Google that doesn’t have much effect on the search results. Google seems to use an internal PageRank value for its ranking algorithm and a public PageRank value for the toolbar.
That would explain why many web pages with a high ranking on Google have a low (toolbar) PageRank.
When you want to trade links with another web site, don’t look at the PageRank of that site. Instead, ask yourself: Is the web site related to your site? Would it make sense for web surfers if they linked to you and you linked to them? Could visitors of the other web site be interested in your site? If you find a web site that you would want to visit or your visitors would want to visit then link to it and ask for a link back to your site.
Just use common sense. If you like a page, changes are that other people also like that page, no matter what PageRank the Google toolbar displays.
I received this in an email from Axandra Search Engine Facts, let me know what you think?

That article was in Web Pro News recently. Bottom line, PageRank is very important, but for whatever reason, the toolbar appears to lag the actual PageRank of pages.
Brad,
Great work on “Stomping the Search Engines”. I have noticed that it is not easy getting reciprocal links with established sites when starting out. I am considering pay-per-click advertising until I can get backlinks established. Does anyone have good advice on pay-per-click advertising?
I would like to ask your audience to join me in trading text links. I learned from your program that sites may or may not need to be relevant to help boost PR rating.

Bradley

Brad, besides Google, and maybe Yahoo or MSN, do you work with any other engines?
In your next newsletter, can you maybe talk about planning ahead for some of these weird shopping engines, things like Faxo, Exava etc.?

I was in the top 10 of google for around 3 months and had been in the top 15 prior to that for another 3 months. Things were looking good. Then all the sudden on this last update I was dumped to 60 something. I hoped I would bounce back but I have only been able to get up to page 3. I dont understand what happened. I have been playing it safe lately having gotten to a comfortable rank. (safe as in no major changes, still stomping though.) Anyway I had bought several pr8 links and had them up for several months prior to my dump. I thought my pr would go up to at least pr6 as well but I had no increase! Still pr5 as well as being dropped. What gives? Maybe I should not have been buying links with minimal to no relavency? Anyway if anyone has ideas I’d love to hear them.
Thanks, David
