Stompers: Yahoo Tidbit

Here’s an interesting tidbit for Stompers to consider. Search “wholesale wedding favors” on Yahoo. Note that kateaspen.com (our new wholesale wedding favors) company is #2. (A couple days ago it was number one.)

My partner was impressed, but I didn’t DO anything. :-) Heh.

I’ve been telling people, as you know, that Yahoo cares more about on-page factors than Google, and is more susceptible to “pure link popularity” as with link farms, cloaked dynamically generated sites, etc. (Note that the #1 site is a cloaked web site. Can you tell?)

Good or bad, such tactics are killing it on Yahoo now. But most people do it clumsily (and it still works). If I ever did a “black hat” seminar I’d probably make a fortune. Nah. There’s enough amateurish search engine spam out there as it is. Plus, it’s easy enough to do search engine marketing right.

Anyway, look at that Yahoo search. Kateaspen comes up #2 and there are only a couple links! None of them did I go out and purposefully obtain. The ONLY link I did was one from this blog. (Links on bradfallon.com anyone?) And if you look at the results, “wholesale wedding favors” has several sites vying for attention, though most are not the home page.

Granted, kateaspen.com is fairly well optimized for “wholesale weddingfavors” — I didn’t put too much effort into it, but hey, I gotta reputation to consider. :-)

Anyway, I thought you’d find that interesting…Fairly well optimized home page, one decent link, not too terrible competitive (multi-word) search phrase, and there you go — top of Yahoo. Not so on MSN (interesting) but the MSN beta results are sarting to look pretty good to me. C’mon Microsoft, let’s launch it already!

    Hi Brad,

Happy Holidays! A question: How long did it take for kateaspen.com to reach this position?

I’ve linked from your blog a few times now over the last couple of weeks. Going through my log files, I don’t seem to have even been visited by googlebot yet.

Another thought – do you think the linking off the main page gets you crawled faster/more reliably?

Sounds interesting enough. I’ve had OK (top 3) results in Yahoo, MSN, Altavista etc. recently, but am nowhere to be found on google.

With all the hassle of playing the SEO games, i’ve been thinking about going ppc exclusively. At least that I can control. Only problem is that on affiliate products the margins are pretty tight at times.

    Greetings,
I have a question that is off topic, that I hope someone can give me a hand with.
I listened to the Stomper CD’s, followed by the teleseminar. I heard a Stomper ask a question about changing a website’s subdomain from “store.yourwebsite.com” to “www.yourwebsite.com”.
I got the impression that there is a right way to do this and a wrong way. What’s the “right” way?

    Thanks in advance,
    Paige

Brad, you never cease to amaze me!

Do you think you can do a million a month in volume just from the web with your “little” store? Would you be the “King of All Favors” or would you just own a small piece of a humongous pie?

Best of luck in ’05 buddy!

    Brad,

Yes, yahoo is interesting. I was so focused on google that I didn’t even pay attention to yahoo. msn was a passing thought… then I realized I was #1 & #2 on msn and #2 & #3 for nitric oxide supplement. I didn’t even really work for my #3 spot but it’s there. Something to think about..

    2005 and beyond!!!

This is in response to Paige above.

I built my store not using yahoo editor so my pages are located at http://www.yogapilatesstore.com and not store.yogapilatesstore.com. I wanted to make sure all traffic going to the store domain could be redirected to the www location so I emailed Yahoo to see how I could achieve this. I got several different answers in our email chain. So I figured the best way to avoid any further confusion was to call Yahoo support. I called Yahoo and spoke to 3 different people, and of course received 3 different answers. I finally just put a JavaScript redirect on store.yogapilatesstore.com to point to http://www.yogapilatesstore.com. This seems to be working. However I was a little surprised that yahoo had no way of pointing all store traffic to the www location. I hope this helps if not I can post the JavaScript code and you can use on your store. Let me know.

    Good job again Brad!
Using your techniques, we were number in Yahoo right after Christmas-less than a month after instituting our first major SEO on the home page.Wow!
We made some changes to see how it affected our standing in Google, and it bumped us down to 10th-ooops.
We’re also 7th on MSN and Alta Vista. Our hardest challenge is still Google-not even close yet :-(
We’re trying Total Optimizer Pro now to check the backlinks more in depth…

This post is off topic but I think it’s worth mentioning, in the last 5 minutes my Google PR has moved from 3 to 4, and my internal pages are between 2 and 4. Previously the internal pages had a PR of 0 to 2, but most of them didn’t exist until I started following the instructions on STSE’s. Thank you Brad I couldn’t have done it without you.
So a pattern is starting to emerge. Google has updated the PR in late June early July, early October and now early January.

    Mike

  20. January 2nd, 2005 | 10:46 am

    To continue Mike’s line.

One of my sites moved up in PR also (2 -> 3) which is nice.

Funny thing is, NONE of the main pages are in google’s top 1000!

#1-4 in all the other major engines, but non-existent in google. Yet google still upped the PR for the homepage.

There is absolutely no way to know or understand this kind of stuff is there!

All the best to all in the new year.

This is very strange. Wondering if any one has seen this before. On my movie download site I have gone from a PR 0 to a PR 4 all thanks to Brads techniques. But this is the strange, thing the login in page to my movie download stats page has a page rank of PR 6! All other sub pages seem to be a PR of 3. I thought the home page would have the highest PR? Any thoughts.

Also my yoga mat store went from a PR 0 to PR 3 in a little over 1 month. Thanks Brad!!!!!!! Can’t wait for the next update.

  25. January 4th, 2005 | 1:53 am

Hey Brad, I’m not trying to short-change anyone, but does Yahoo look at the quality of the link, or just relevance?

    Thanks for any help!

  26. January 4th, 2005 | 9:29 am

We also had our PR upgraded. Many of our internal pages went up to PR4, but our home page (Highly optimized, number 1 on Yahoo right after Christmas)is still ust a PR2

I noticed in researching our competition in Google, that one of the top ten (number 4 I believe)has a very plain text only page with no links except to their home page (which is Not optimized for that particular term). Now, it’s not an automatic redirect, but it has one link only-direct to their home page….interesting. I may try this on some of our other keywords.

(Always research)- Yahoo looks at both. We rented some high quality links and it took our site from 135th to number 1 in Yahoo in about 4 weeks!
Also, you should post your html signature file at the bottom of each post to create a backlink of anchor text to your site. This will help you and makes your contribution of time more worthwhile.

    Hi and Happy New Year.

I have found that most sensibly optimised pages end up doing well on Yahoo which is quite a relief when you concentrate on Google and get nowhere!

Google continues to give me grief.

I have one site with only 2 backlinks admittedly PR5 but with non relevant link text. This site gets visited every day by Google (sometimes twice) even though the main content has been the same for about 8 months since the site was launched. The site homepage is now PR5 but it fell like a brick in December and is now outside the top #500. It refuses to come back.

I have found that some of the strategies that used to work well for page titles no longer work for 2 and 3 word key phrases. In fact for 3 word phrases putting all three words in order in the title appears to give a worse result than using just 2 of the words.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi Brad,

I have purchased the CD sets and I should say, I have learned a lot and some of my doubts have indeed been clarified.

I just wonder how I can exchange links with your site. I mainly do affiliate marketing only. My sites are as follows:
    a1ventures.com
    http://www.submitventures.com
    seventhday-adventist.com
    hotels-motels-discount.com
    discountgrandfatherclock.net
    catalog-onlinel.net
    christmasgiftsidea.com
    onlinebibleshop.com
    musicalinstrumentonline.com
    litronics.net

On the otherhand, i have one more doubt regarding links. Most of my site have been done through a “website making company” like homestead. Then i would buy a domain name and forward that domain name to the site I have made. My question is, should I link directly to my domain name? or should the link be directed to the homepage url of the site I created? What is the effect is i direct the site to the domain name or to the homepage url?

Does anyone else believe that yahoo might favor yahoo hosted sites? Can they show favortism like that? Maybe someday I will change my host and see what happens to my rankings in yahoo.

Does anyone know when the next google update is going to be?

it’s interesting what results you can get with some basic SEO and Stomper techniques.

I made a new site on Sunday evening, which I set up about a dozen backlinks from PR5 sites and it’s already in the top 100 in google for the search term.

Wonder if I can get it in the top 10 before sunday night… ;)

We agree that Yahoo is just as important as Google. We are implementing the stomper suggestions on a daily basis. We have tried Google Adwords for 3 months and just signed up for Overture ppc.
Since implementing the link suggestions we have dissappeard off the radar.
    Have we over-optimized?
