Stomper Update: “Google Cash” Crash

3. SEO Pro Update: Date and Location Finalized for the “How to Be a Professional Search Consultant” One-On-One Training Program

****************************************************

Welcome Stompers,

Remember last year’s Florida update? Google made major changes to its algorithm right before Christmas and and kicked out 60% or more of the sites that had been in the Top 100 for many commercial keywords. Many online merchants were crushed right before their holiday buying season.

This year, Google played a little nicer.

First, they left the organic (free) search listings alone. (Thanks, G!)

Second, they leaked rumors for months that only one domain per keyword would be allowed. That means that affiliates bidding on AdWords would no longer be able to link directly to the sites of the merchants.

Third, when they finally announced it, they waited until after the start of the new year. (It just took effect in the last couple days.)

Fourth, by all objective standards (and the most important “user experience,”) this change was a good thing.

The interesting thing to me is that for the first few days many commentators couldn’t decide if it was a good thing or a bad thing for those affected by it the most — affiliates and merchants.

Specifically, Google changed their AdWords policy so that only one ad will display for any one “displayed URL” for any given search term.

Huh? Simply, this means that when you search for, say, the title of a book, only one ad can appear that shows Amazon.com as the URL in the ad.

Here’s a link to Google’s new official AdWords policy.

However, if you search, e.g., seth godin, right now, there are two Amazon ads that display. One URL shows amazon.com and another shows amazon.com/books. I checked with Google, and they say that’s only because the changes are still taking effect. Ultimately, only one root domain (i.e., “mydomain.com”) will display for any given keyword search. Of course, it was already the policy that the “display URL” had to actually match the URL that users were directed to. In other words, you can’t just redirect the user from the ad, to your domain, to Amazon.com with your affiliate link.

But you’d think those affected would know at least whether the change is good or bad.

For Google users, it’s certainly good. You see a lot more variety of ads rather than a whole page filled up with ads for the same merchant.

For merchants and affiliates, however, it’s a mixed bag. If you’ve been playing the affiliate game by building your own web sites and paying for clicks to your site, and then sending the traffic off to merchants’ sites with your affiliate link, it’s a home run. Your competition just shrunk dramatically.

On the other hand if you’ve been playing what some call the Google Cash game (after the e-book of the same title) by just buying clicks and linking directly to merchants’ web sites, you’re practically out of business. If you’re not familiar, this was a popular game of arbitrage, whereby affiliates would buy traffic from Google and just send it directly to the merchant site via their affiliate link. The profit of these arbitrage players was simply the difference between the gross affiliate commissions and the cost of the clicks to send the traffic.

If you haven’t played this game, you may be surprised at what some people were doing with this method. One friend of mine had his best month ever last month — over $1 million dollars in gross affiliate commissions in one month. Even if the cost of the traffic was “most” of that, it’s still a good month! (Before you scoff, realize that Dan has been doing this for a long time and has a sizable staff running all their programs.) But if you want to learn about making money in the affiliate game, he is one of the best people you can talk to.

In fact, I am trying to talk him into doing a teleseminar for Stompers. Now that his system has been mostly destroyed by Google, it won’t hurt him to divulge every detail of what he and his partner did for the last couple years. It’s an amazing story and there is still a lot you can learn from this expert AdWords practitioner. (For a preview, don’t forget to listen to Search Engine Radio every Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern, 9:00 a.m. Pacific. Dan is going to be a guest on the show in the next few weeks. Or you can always listen to all the shows in the archives at www.seoradio.com.)

So the bottom line for affiliates is that for practical purposes you can no longer link directly to the merchants’ web sites. (Of course one ad will always display, but too often there’s one crazy guy that’s bidding too much, losing money and doesn’t seem to care.)

Better to spend your time creating unique landing pages with your own content and linking visitors to the merchant site from there. By the way, some commentators have noted over the last couple days that smart merchants will start creating landing pages for their affiliates to host on their own domains, similar to the way they used to provide banners for their affiliates. The problem with this is that the content of your “landing page” or “landing site” must be unique. A merchant can’t just provide the content, robust as it may be, to their affiliates.

Each affiliate must create their own unique landing page with unique content that “adds value” (in Google’s words).

If you’re a merchant with a lot of affiliates, you’re probably not happy. Some companies, like Zappos.com, that had a ton of affiliates linking straight to them, are probably taking it in the shorts right now. Others, where their own ads were getting blocked by so many affiliates linking to their competitor, are probably happy to be back in the game.

Regardless of how this change affected you, if at all, I think the Google Cash Crash illustrates what I have been saying for some time. For making money online, there’s nothing like selling real products to real people. (Read the next section for my reasons why.)

**************************************************************

Besides selling real (physical) products online, there are basically two options for making money on the internet. You can sell information products (e-books, CD’s, videos) or you can sell “nothing.” I mean you can be an affiliate of other companies (that sell one of these two types of products) and get paid for basically driving traffic to their site.

Here are three reasons I’m a big fan of selling real, physical products online.

First, you can have your own affiliates. Affiliate programs are a key part of online marketing for many reasons, mostly related to leverage. Like buying real estate with other people’s money (OPM), having an affiliate program allows you to make money with OPT (Other People’s Traffic). That’s why some of the most successful internet marketers, like Corey Rudl and Yanik Silver don’t care about search engines. If you have 50,000 affiliates selling your stuff, you don’t really care where your one site ranks on Google.

If you “own the store,” you can build up your affiliate base over time until you have more sales coming in than you can count and stop worrying about where your traffic is coming from.

Second, selling physical products is better, in my opinion, then selling information products, because it’s flat out easier. If you want to sell information products, you have to have some skills. Mostly WRITING. Even if you don’t have information yourself that people will want to pay for, that’s ok. You can hire people to write ebooks for you or whatever. Or you can sell other people’s information products (but see Reason #1 — you want to HAVE affiliates, not BE an affiliate.)

But either way, there are sales letters to be written, newsletters to be written, and it never stops. If you don’t like sitting down and WRITING then selling information for a living is not going to be your cup of tea.

And here’s the dirty little secret about information products. Most of the time, you have to keep making new ones. Once most everyone in your target market has bought your ebook or other info product you have to make another one. Or else it gets outdated — same thing.

With a store selling physical products, in many cases repeat customers keep buying the same products over and over. Or there is a continual supply of people that want an infinite variety of products. This leads me to…

Third, selling physical products online is flat out easier because there’s more volume. Walk into any mall and look around. There may be a book store (information products) and a CD store (“information” product), but most every store in the mall from the food court to the department stores sells real physical products.

For that matter, walk into any of the department stores (the smallest one is way bigger than the largest bookstore) and there, too, the vast majority of their products are physical, not information-based. Even Amazon, one of the bigger information sellers, has as many tabs for physical products as they do for information-based ones.

These days it is so easy for any person to open their own store and sell real, physical products that are in high demand and often have million-dollar brand names that you can sell on YOUR store with YOUR affiliates.

The bottom line is that the volume of physical product sales just blows away info products, it’s easier to get your piece of the pie, and you can build up your own affiliates.

Case in point: Without knowing anything about sales letters or copywriting (or much about internet marketing for that matter), my wife put up a Yahoo Store a year ago (January 5th) and sold $1.3 million in her first year online. Now instead of having to create a new info product and start over, she is just continuing to build on what she already has. In fact, she sold over $100,000 in the first 11 days of 2005 — with just one Yahoo Store. And of course no one says you can only have one store.

(True, it helped her that her site is #1 on Google and #1 on Yahoo for “wedding favors”, but you can rank for YOUR search terms too. If you don’t already have Stomping the Search Engines which teaches you how to rank high for your chosen keywords, step-by-step, I recommend you get it here.)

In the time it takes an info marketer to create one $29 e-book, you can launch another store selling any kind of physical merchandise. And with modern dropshippers (like wholesale wedding favors) you never have to stock inventory, you don’t have to create any of your own products, you don’t have to write anything, and you don’t buy anything until it’s already sold.

The fact is that selling physical products online may be the best way to go for most people who want to make money on the internet. And many experts are beginning to agree.

For example, Ken McCarthy is known as the Father of Internet Marketing. Ken used to say that selling information products on the internet is the world’s perfect business. But even he has come to admit that, for most people, selling physical products online is really as good as it gets — and a lot easier. If you use drop shippers, fulfilling orders is no harder than letting your customers download an ebook — and it’s much easier to attain a higher volume.

So Ken is hosting a 2-day small group workshop in Miami Andy Jenkins, one of the leading experts on selling physical products online, and me this February 19th and 20th. If you can make it (there are just a few seats left — class size is limited to a maximum of 32) I’m sure it will be well worth the trip to Miami — and probably warmer this time of year than where you are. As they say, the weather will be warm, but the small group learning environment will be HOT, HOT, HOT!

And last but not least, for those of you who are interested in working one-on-one with me to become a professional search engine marketing consultant, the date and location of the initial training weekend has been set. It’s February 26th and 27th in Atlanta at Georgia Tech University’s Global Learning Center. It’s a totally high tech learning classroom — every seat has a new PC, a flat screen monitor, and an internet connection faster than a T1.

room.jpg

It’s not just an intensive weekend Boot Camp. It’s a year long one-on-one training and coaching program. I will be limiting the size of the group to 10 people, so if you are interested in getting the information about this unique program, go here to get on the list and leave your mailing address. I will be sending an information prospectus to everyone and conducting interviews next week.

Until next time,

Keep on Stomping!

Brad stomping the search engines is great. I ordered it to help a customer get a better page rank for his website. In one week I traded 75 relavent and got his site listed 1,2,3 on google, msn and Yahoo for his search terms. Within 5 days I the googlebot spider his home page 57 times.

I also launched a new site to drive traffic to my ebay auctions. In 13 days google spidered my new site 18 times and my ebay store currently shows up #11 on google for the 1st set of search terms I optmized for. I am currently in my 3rd month of over 20k in sales since purchasing stomping the search engines. Thanks for everthing.

    :D Hi Brad..
Just wanted you to know that as the Google “Cash Crash” was developing, I was in conversation (both phone and email) with my affiliate connections affiliate manager for the company iSatellite .
I have a website Free Directv,Free Direct tv, Dish Network satellite system offer, How to get FREE electronics FREE DirecTV,Free DISH Network New and Used Satellite Sales, how to get free electronics.
Yes the “google cash” author and his related associates (Perry Marshall and others)were amazed to see that sega go down but were effectively coming back with exactly what you are describing, that being, the end was pretty much “sealed” for the “lazy” affiliate (IMO the google cash clan as a whole) where you just buy google adwords and redirect the surfer to the affiliate site and the “difference” in cost vs profit of sales is the net profit of this design.
Their new statement was basically if one was/had been setting up real sites, real content and real products all along…that they were in a “gold mine” situation as the vast majority of “lazy” affiliates would pretty much quickly disappear. They had some “alternative” suggestions and if I remember , it involved a sub-domain arrangement where the main url-holder sets up private sub-domains for their affiliates…which treats a “landing page” for the affiliate . (I am told that the sub-domain is treated as an independent domain by most search engines—wonder what google will do with this)
This was exactly what the affiliate manager was proposing to me and saying that the affiliate could use the same site but “co-branded” to the affiliates name. Of course , since I had already been building my own site the way I want it,and optimized the main pages for the terms I wanted, I just con tinued my path.
What I would like to know is what your thoughts would be on the “co-branded domain concept” and whether it would be possibly more lucrative than the general site design…or maybe to use both in this game.
I was just starting to do a “google cash” campaign and toying adwords since I had already done a lot of keyword research through Internet Marketing Wizard (one cool program that saves a LOT of time) and knew which keyword phrases might be more likely to produce. I did not buy the “google cash” program although I was just about to do so.. Maybe I should look into the program you suggested in this update..I dont remember a link to it ..or even if it was yet in existence..Maybe you have a similar program you suggest that I might ought to look at for this info on creating the best google adword campaigns and the best methods for making it profitable (ie sub-domain, real site, one page landing pages..etc)

    Hi Brad & fellow Stompers.

I would have to agree with everything that you have said above regarding selling physical products instead of information products.

I have been selling many affiliate products via the Google Cash method for the past 18 months.

Fortunately for me I had set up my own landing pages so that I could build up my client database & have clients for life rather than just a once off sale.

I have my good friend and mentor Perry Marshall to thank for that.

Brad, If yourself, Andy & your better halves :-) ever feel like having a trip to Australia to have a holiday & do a few seminars, just let me know. There are many people down under that would love to hear what you have got to say.

    Think about it !!

P.S. I have said it before and I will say it again.

Interesting. Evidently the Ad Words was getting too spammy for Google to give up revenue on the competitive bidding on common terms that would be bid by affiliates.

I don’t do affiliate marketing, so I didn’t realize that people were bidding on terms for affiliate commission profits. Interesting to learn. Stay tuned to Brad’s blog :-)

    Brad and fellow Stompers,

Selling physical products is by far an easier game to play then info products. I’ve dipped my toes in both arenas and the ongoing maintenance of info products is more intensive. Of course, there’s customer service involved with physical products. But if you’re a people person, it’s a slam dunk.

Thanks for everything and I invite anybody to trade links with me.

Isn’t google unfair by frequently changing it’s policies? It may be true that it is challenging but it seems unfair for those who have built their business for a long time as well as those who are still starting thinking what they’ve just learned is still true when in fact, it is no longer valid – as a result these new comers would think that internet businesses are just scams!

Thanks brad for your new advice. I will soon be venturing into selling physical products. My new website is still coming – http://www.grandfatherclock.biz. I just hope things would work out for me too this year.

I think Google have made the right move with these changes. It makes sense from an end user’s viewpoint. I dabbled in the GoogleCash method with some success, but I always good best results by creating my own affiliate pages. Affiliate marketing works best when affiliates add value to the sales process by providing valuable content. Ken Evoy has long preached this concept of PREselling and it is just as valid as ever.

I wonder how this will affect the pricing of Adwords. It got to the point that I was having to bid from $2 – $3 per keyword just to get on the first page. I am sorry, but that is just too big of a gamble. I have better odds at the casino. Maybe this will level the playing field.

Well, what amazed me much is, no matter how many times Google change, but some website still have a lot of pages on the 1st SERP.

Btw, brad, selling physical products is of course easier than information product. But it cost a bomb for shipping ;) especially using courier service. Sometimes it cost more than the products itself!

Brad, this is one of your best newsletters.

    Questions?

Websurfing is now an hour a day for the average American. That is 15% of discretionary leisure time, and rising.

Big companies only spend 3% of their ad dollars online. What is going to happen when the competition for adwords goes up 3-4-500%?

Will Microsoft and Yahoo ever launch competitive products to Adsense?

The hottest two web stocks are Google and Ebay. Both are driven by small business. As goes small business, so goes the American economy?

Crash is right – Adsense income down by 60%. In my niche, there must have been many affiliates.

It is starting to pick up again now.

I don’t see how people could get away with redirecting AdWords – I tried it once last year, when I didn’t understand the rules – and they banned my ad until I created my own landing page.

Hopefully Google’s policy change will make the system better than it was before.

I’m preparing to redesign my site and make it much more people and search engine friendly.

    Hi Brad and fellow Stompers,

I would have to most certainly agree with you. Selling a physical product is definitely a good idea.

Not that selling an information product is a bad idea, it’s just that having a product mix (info product, physical product, front-end product, back-end product, up-sell product, etc.)is really the best way to go.

Even having offline customers makes good business sense considering what Google has done to affiliate marketers.

You should always have your own landing page for whatever affiliate program you’re promoting. We marketers test and track everything. So having your own landing page for an affiliate program you’re in is the perfect tool to differentiate yourself from your fellow affiliates and allows you to track your (and I emphasize “Your”) prospects as well.

Best wishes for your business success,

    Hey Brad:

I purchased Stomping the Search Engines a week ago and am listening to Disc #5 today. Really Great stuff! I should mention that, as an affiliate of Art.com, I got several ideas from your CDs on how to promote my 12 new stores. Not the least of which had to do with my domain name — which, as you can see, is a take off from the term that’s placed underneath every product sold by Art.com (i.e., “Buy From Art.com”). I added a disclaimer at the bottom of my site — something to the effect that I’m an affiliate, but would like to know what you think of my using that term as my domain name. Wise? Worrysome? What??

P.S. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

  32. January 16th, 2005 | 3:32 pm

Great Info Brad. I have been waiting for the SEO semminar ever since you mentioned it back in the summer. Unfortunately the weekend in Feb you have scheduled absolutely will not work for me. I am still very interested and please do this again. I will be there!!!

    Thanks

    Hi Brad,

Thanks for the thorough explanation and commentary. It helps us understand with greater clarity the dynamics of these things as well as helps us make informed decisions. I did the Google Cash thing for short time early last year but switched to a more “real” method as you say.

    Keep up the fantastic work!

    Brad,

The sharing of your success whilst in its infancy is applauded!

I am a firm believer that anyone can get a coveted high PR with Google but only by the application of current and legitimate SEO techniques… and you are living testament to this.

Any plans on teaching near Melbourne, Australia any time soon?

Brad, for some time now I have been confusing two people with similar sounding names ie. Brad Callen and yourself?

Kindly educate me as to who Brad Callen is and how 2 people with similar names, coincidentally appear to be proficient in the same field of SEO as well?

Continued success to you and your partner.
    Roseanne(Rox) van Langenberg

PS. BTW, I had a costly slap on my wrist from the mighty Google recently: my very first blog the Marketing Defined Blog was awarded a PR4 by Google when it was set up early Jaunary ’05 (whilst I have had a successful offline Marketing Consultancy for over 20 years, at my level of SEO expertise this initial result was more than pleasing :-) .. a few days later I was back to a fat zero, when I inadvertently broke a little-known SE rule, setting up another trial blog with a similar name, ie: Marketing Defined Journal … and with similar content.

Regrettably, I only discovered a few days later that one gets a 30 day penalty for the first offence, 60 for the next and so on …. I’m sure you know how the rest goes .. have covered the rest of Google’s ruling in my above Blog and would very much appreciate your comments as to whether I understand the ruling correctly.

    Brad,

Seems this blog is mostly for others sounding off. Be that as it may, it’s good to see that there are areas where good intentioned people are making good progress and sharing the blessings of that progress. I’m still working through your Stomping CDs, though I have managed to put up a website (see http://www.buyfromart.com). I’ll continually optimize/ update it as I learn more, and I must admit that I don’t have a Google rating just yet, but I have mucho optimism and I’ll certainly hang in there, perfecting the system!!!

Glad Brad and Andy put the stomper info. together. Now we all have a outlet to discuss the latest changes in google and other search engine.

Just think year ago many of us had no clue what we now know.

When you think about it. Before of discoving Stomper we would have just let this change slipp by us, not knowing what just happened to us.
Now with armed with Brad and Andy’s knowledge we have a bit of control over what happens with our site and why.

So as all the changes happen with google and others we’ll just make the necessary changes to get the results we now come to expect.
If you haven’t already gotten stomper, get it now. So a year from now you’re in complete control.

Are you planning to your blog?

If a blog doesn’t pass PR or count as a backlink, does that mean the search engine spiders will no longer index the linked page?

Ask Jeeves isn’t going to join Google and Yahoo in the tag.

So, does that mean that links in blogs won’t be followed by the big two, but it will be by Ask?

I know this will make a huge difference in the quanity of blog posts, especially by the porn sites and pharma sites. Brad, what are your thoughts on this?

Will it stop PR from going from your blog to sites that post here?

  61. B
    January 19th, 2005 | 1:41 pm

Here’s why Stomping Blogs will soon have no benefit on PR.

This comes directly from the GOOGLE BLOG!

    Preventing comment spam
If you’re a blogger (or a blog reader), you’re painfully familiar with people who try to raise their own websites’ search engine rankings by submitting linked blog comments like “Visit my discount pharmaceuticals site.” This is called comment spam, we don’t like it either, and we’ve been testing a new tag that blocks it. From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists.

We hope the web software community will quickly adopt this attribute and we’re pleased that a number of blog software makers have already signed on:

    Brad Fitzpatrick – LiveJournal
    Dave Winer – Scripting News
    Anil Dash – Six Apart
    Steve Jenson – Blogger
    Matt Mullenweg – WordPress
    Stewart Butterfield – Flickr
    Anthony Batt – Buzznet
    David Czarnecki – blojsom
    Rael Dornfest – Blosxom
    Mike Torres – MSN Spaces

We’ve also discussed this issue with colleagues at our fellow search engines and would like to thank MSN Search and Yahoo! for supporting this initiative.

    Hi Brad,

So does this mean they are live with new? or just trying it out?

As always it seems that the seemingly ‘easy ways’ get shut off.

Although I’m not entirely sure that it means the end of the ‘google cash’ method. It more than likely just means that people will start really thinking a bit more about what they are promoting before simply tossing up ads.

Then again, for those who don’t really want to think about it it is simply enough to cut/paste a pre-made ad/copy from nearly any affiliate site and make a landing page in 20 minutes or less. Will perhaps cut into the margins a bit for some programs, but such is life.

With all the rumors and speculations, it is nice to have a sounding board. But I don’t think I understand how they can ‘discredit’ that which they started. Yes, some people do abuse the system, but why must those of us who play fair, contribute and create valuable content for readers and thinkers be punished for the others actions? I am not convinced, yet.

In the past, I have had poor results using Google Adwords (and SEO for that matter). I look forward to listening to your tips on pay per click on the Stomp CD’s. I will post my results after I have had implemented some of the ideals.

Regarding your comments about physical products, I tend to agree. A good SEO friend of mine says the exact same thing: Find a small, untapped niche with real products and sell those online. Hi Brad!
We too are stompers and have completed up to cd rom 6, which took us through advanced linking.
We implemented our internal link structure and started exchanging reciprocal links as suggested by the stomper. Last week we were notified by the Link Market directory that Google penalizes sites that have too many links per page, (more than 50 to be exact.)
They were including our internal link structure plus our link partners links.
We noticed that Andy has changed his recriprocal partners page to separate link categories that open to individual pages with about 20 links per page.
    1) We haven’t heard this information on Stomper. Is this something new?
    2) Can someone help us with splitting our link pages?

    Thanks so much in advance!

What happens when you try to merge Google Ads and Amazon Ads?
Blogs are a big way to monitize your traffic and grow your side revenue. Amazon ads does not work that better as Google Ads in terms of revenue, but Google Ads has a turnaround in terms of cents while Amazon is in Dollars.

So what do say? Check this out “AmazonAds”
AmazonAds is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display Amazon unobtrusive product ads on their website’s content pages and earn money. and the best part is that this service is FREE to use and AmazonAds does not charge for this service. Your revenue goes directly to your AmazonAssociate Account.

    What is Google Cash?

How likely is it that google is the only tech company in existance that is going to remain unaffected by greenspan’s kibosh?

Well, it seems that Chris Carpenter has come out with a new version of Google Cash for 2005.

I don’t think the Google Cash days are actually done, but marketers definitely revamp their marketing efforts using AdWords.

Having your own product is great – but not everyone has the time or wants to deal with customer service and not everyone can afford to outsource it either. Google Cash is a great alternative.

Google definitely made things tougher for affiliates to be ‘lazy’ or profitting easily from affiliate marketing. But it’s still a rather idea model, not having to worry about building your own product, and customer responsibilities of product issues, customer support, etc. Clearly, the game is much tougher now.

Anyhow, the Google Cash folks seem to have a new system that would help their members stay on top of the game.
