Interview with a Blog Spammer
Check out Chris Pirillo’s blog/podcast/show if you haven’t seen it already. For example, this interview with the “Oilman” is pretty interesting.
One point is that the most successful spammers eventually go white hat — short term, less money, long term they get to stay around. Did you know that many of the current internet marketing gurus started out as rank email spammers? True story.

This truly does not suprise me. Some of these internet gurus still have a “rank” air to them.

That truly *does* surprise me, but it makes a lot of sense — especially given what Allen Gardyne et al say about using your resources to try to trick the search engines.

Pretty interesting.
By the way I had to turn off comment feature at all at my blog, just to get rid of those f… spammers.

Wow, amazing seeing a couple posters here seeming awful jealous of Todd. The fact is doing what he did in the past allowed him to hone his skillset faster than most people. He deserves to be where he is now.
People have funny belief systems and inner “rules” concerning the acquisition of wealth.
I wonder if mailorder marketers have these kind of black and white conflicts? Perhaps around testing ads for products that don’t exist? But I see way more discussion over these imaginary boundaries online.
It seems that the minute you figure out an “angle” the game changes or the rules change….but it sure is a lot of fun learning.

I would guess that many spammers - especially email spammers who seem to get through my email filters better than my legitimate emails can(!) - must get pretty skilled in ways that could be turned into more legitimate directions.
On a similar note, Porn webmasters et al are supposedly some of the best SEO gurus in the ecommerce business. I read a forums post about a year ago that a bunch of those guys have their own forum to exchange SEO tactics… but I lost the url for it.
(likely was a membership forum anyways).
Anywhos - great thread!

This is just like organized/gang crime and even rappers to some extent. They start out poor and desperate, then get rich and conservative–not wanting to risk their lifestyle. It all comes down to how much you have to lose, I suppose.
Brad thanks for posting this. I loved your stomping the search engine cd’s.

there’s a efficient way to awoid spam in anonymous blogs: disallow (checked by a script) any links in the blogs and inform about it __explicitly__.
