eval.google.com – Google’s Secret Evaluation Lab “Rate Hub Google”
Henk van Ess started a blog called Search Bistro yesterday. It was slashdotted almost immediately.
What caused the stir is Henk’s disclosure of some of the details behind Google’s Secret Evaluation Lab, otherwise known as Rater Hub Google.
Apparently, Google uses part-time workers around the world to make “quality evaluations” of various search results as a way to improve their algorithm.

“Slashdottted” means it was put on Slashdot.org, a PR 9 news site.
No real surprise here. In order to have the best, humans must be involved at many levels. Computers are great, but they can’t do it all.

I’m sure some would rename this:
evil.google.com. I’ve always thought that when pages come up in the SERPS, just like some search engines have a link to open the page in a new window, there should also be voting icons where users can express their like or dislike for the results they see and actually clicking a link would constitute a vote.

The Slashdot effect is a particular example of how a popular website can cause a smaller site to slow down or even temporarily close after causing a great increase in the number of visitors going to the smaller site. The huge influx of web traffic is a result of it being mentioned on Slashdot.org, a popular technology news and information site. Typically, less robust sites are unable to cope with the huge increase in traffic and become unavailable

It just proves that search engine bots will never completely eliminate spam. It seems that in the end humans have the final say.
I believe these human testers have been trained to identify “thin” affiliates as well. There are serious implications for all affiliate marketers out there. But the message is still the same – give valuable content to your visitors and both humans and bots will be happy.
