from Mexico City

I’m at the airport in Mexico City this morning, the city of 25 million people, on the way back to Atlanta.

I was speaking at a conference of WSI franchisees. About 20% of the audience only spoke Spanish, and since my Spanish classes are a pretty distant memory, I gave my presentation in English. However, there was a guy translating as I spoke — it felt like I was at the U.N. or something.

Mexico city is quite something. But I think I’m going to hold down the traveling for awhile. Except for a trip to Manhattan for Seth Godin’s one day seminar, I’m going to stay at home — and maybe figure out what’s going on with Google.

I am a relative new newby to SEO and have been keeping track of my site’s link count with Google, Yahoo and MSN daily. Someone told me Google only reports quarterly, but I was excited and have kept dated records for three weeks now.

I have noticed that my count changes daily, going up and down. Is this normal or an indication that I need to optimize differently?

I can answer that question, Casey, as I work with Brad on his radio show.

He’s had a new guest the past two weeks and will have another one next Tuesday’s show and at least 2-3 more in February.

The past two shows should soon be archived on the seoradio.com.

Hello Brad, I am very happy for having attended to the conference in Mexico City, I am an Internet Consultant for WSI in the 25,000,000 people City and thanks god I have a big market for my very young business. As you all can imagine I have plenty of things going on with all the Internet solutions I provide as an IC, but after hearing Brad’s conference my attention was immediatly taken to SEO and the potential of business in my country since almost no one provide the services here in Mexico. I hope to hear some advice from the SEO community to have a good start on this adventure. (maybe someone would like to partner with me)

We’re also running some tests on other sitemap types right now via php scripting with blinding results. If you haven’t used it yet, get to it; the difference between before and after is glaring.

  49. February 4th, 2006 | 1:15 pm

Like the rest, I’d like to know what’s going on. As a newbie, and just getting started, for several weeks I have been showing as being indexed on Google, but no PR and no reference to any backlinks, however, this week, not indexed at all.

Could it be that we are placing too much emphasis on changing algorithms and not enough on the possibility that all this up and down and back and forth is possibly Googles own ineptness? Could it be that their home-grown server system, basically like a room full (literally hundreds) of desktop PC’s tied together by a home-grown software program that’s supposed to keep track of where the data lives, simply can’t deliver consistent results on a regular basis?

Insiders at Google admit that they have multiple server failures per day, and hope that the data was backed on another server that doesn’t fail. But in their defense, they do have multiple redundancies. So which server was that on??

I can see fluctuating PR and position based on algoryihm changes, but indexed and then not and then back again? Maybe they are snickering, not because they’ve outsmarted us again, but we give them credit for more intelligence than they really have.

same thing going on with me, indexed #1 for fairy ring facts but no pr yet, guess they haven’t updated the pr bar yet

  51. February 4th, 2006 | 11:36 pm

Paul… Google doesn’t update the PR bar very often. Whenever they feel like it, they do it (It’s usually every 3 months or so).

The thing you should be worried about is where in the rankings you are. If you’ve got a nr.1 ranking, then that’s fine.

Just curious, when you say the stomper video is ready, do you mean its coming out this year(one year after originally promised) or next year?

Also curious, what are the odds that a video on seo that was filmed last year is still relevant today, just in case it does come out this year?

  53. February 5th, 2006 | 8:06 am

Google has been sporadic of late, I do think that it time is closely approaching for them to do another update.

Okay, today, after weeks of being indexed, and then not, I’m indexed again. Still no PR, and still no reference to backlinks. Doesn’t look like I’ve been crawled again, simply appears to be data restored from a previous backup. I still think it’s a Google technical issue rather than an algorithmic change.

Gerard, I appreciate the insight on the PR update!!
