The more things change, the more things change
Alphonse Karr said, “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” According to wikipedia, he’s the originator of the phrase usually translated, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
He said that in 1849.
Now, if the rate of change is affected by the flow of information, it seems that things are going to be changing pretty quickly.
A week’s worth of the New York Times contains more information that a person was likely to come across in their lifetime.
This year, more information will be created than in the previous 5,000 years.
This video, Shift Happens, is worth a few minutes to watch. And leave a comment if you can.

Wow…I knew we were progressing rapidly, I just didn’t realize how rapidly. And with the large labor shortages in places like China and India, it presents huge opportunities for those savvy entrepreneurs able to capitalize on these monstrous work forces.
Very eye-opening video Brad, thanks for the post!
China is going to take over the US, it’s just a matter of time.

I just posted a blog related to this on our site http://www.queenbeemarketing.com/buzzblog that looks at the history of the “true” net (communications over wire) and we were taken-back by how history repeats itself. Just look at how Google purchased YouTube to enter the video market, and you can see the pattern from wire to Morse Code to Phone to T.V. What’s next? Making sense of it all? No, it’s all about bringing together a GLOBAL market and re-organizing EVERYTHING based on true democracy. It’s going to destroy a lot of businesses, and create many amazing opportunities. Communication will destroy our idea of governing bodies. This is going to be weird, scary, and fun.
Thanks Brad for a GREAT post, I’ve already forwarded it to my network.
Now that was awesome. I really liked how it shows how much the United States speak on education research, which doesn’t even match half of what Nintendo spent on R&D ($114 million). The Wii is awesome by the way…

China is a huge global threat. But you cant stop em.

Wow! This certainly is awesome!
I remember going to a thanksgiving sale and there were so many Chinese people lining up. I said to myself, “Is this still the US? Where did this people come from?”
With many productions going to China, certainly China will overtake the US in terms of economy one day.

Anyone concerned that more than just our economy will be taken over?

As usual, those that can anticipate changing trends, behaviors and demographics are at an advantage and those that can’t will be left behind. It can be a little daunting to try to grasp but we’re so much better off with this type of knowledge than we are without.

I knew that technology progressing but had no idea that it was that much. It’s kind of unsettling and yet exciting all at the same time.

Interesting view of the technological advances. But even with advnaces in computer technology and information technology I believe you will still find that “the more things change, the more they remain the same” The human element will see to that.

I am reminded of the first time I saw the night sky in Wyoming. Having only seen the sky from the vantage of the NY metropolitan area (albeit from the relatively dark 1960s) the infinite and the infinitesimal self the stars revealed gave me a sense of belonging to something greater than myself. If it had been accompanied with that haunting incessantly repeating music it would have scared the crap out of me.

People have commented on the fact that in years to come the Chinese economy could be larger than our own. Probably, it will be… but, is that such a bad thing? I think that in the future … great economies will keep us all safe. Interdependence will keep us from fighting wars with one another. And, in the new world economy will one nation prevail as a power house?… or will each player have such a niche that there is no true “winner”? But, rather, we will all be so dependent on each other. These are interesting questions.

This may be a good time to pick up another major language…especially when major search engines are trying to break into the foreign internet market.

I dont think that we need to worry about the economy of China becoming large. What we need to worry about is how that extra pollution and waste from the economy is going to affect the fragile nature of the planet.

Very good post,
Visited China myself last year and it was amazing how much they are like us in the United States. The older generation was still using the old methhods but the younger people were full out living a good life just as the those in the states. Hope prudent decisions from them as they are now and will be even more of a world force.

We are due for a big shift and many elders prophesize that it will happen by 2012…

Is it any wonder that perhaps hundreds of millions of Netizens switch on their respective computers in the middle of the night on the way to the toilet to check email or touch bases with some forum?
Whereas information used to be in the sole possession of the aristocracy and landed class, it is now available to a gazillion people who haven’t the foggiest idea how to utilize this data.
In the future, some people will make a living teaching people how to trash the 99 percent of trash in their lives.
Decidophobia and information overload have gone mainstream. The result may be nations of slaves who are unable to manipulate the exponentially increasing info-babble in their favor.
