Micro Loans
This is the power of small business. You’ve heard about the Micro Loan programs — people living in poverty are able to start a small business with a loan of less than $100.
Kevin Corcoran, a friend of mine, is a former McKinsey consultant and retired large company executive. Now, he spends most of his time working with an African nonprofit called Maji Mazuri that’s doing some amazing thing in a part of the world that needs all the help they can get.
Yesterday, he was in my office for a meeting and showed me how they’re using free online video to help get their message out. If you’re interested in entrepreneurism, venture capital, small business, etc., watch the video below about the micro loan program. It describes in detail how the programs actually works.
Kevin’s program operates with less than 1% administrative overhead. He donates all his time and all of the money they raise goes directly to the people who need it.
Kevin is not web savvy, but he made the videos while he was in Africa, and later wrote and recorded the voiceovers with a webmaster’s help. Then, the guy helping him added them to their web site and YouTube.
What other ideas do you have to help him raise money for this very worthy cause where a little bit of money really does a lot of good?
I suggested that they add a title to the videos on YouTube so viewers could go back to their own web site if they wanted more information.
If you would like to put one person in a business of their own, $70 would do it. They take PayPal at their web site but so far they haven’t really gotten many online donations. If you have any ideas or advice for Kevin you can email him at kevin [at] bradfallon [dot] com. Be sure to copy me: bradf [at] bradfallon [dot] com.
You can see their YouTube page here.

There is a web business model at Prosper.com that your friend may want to look at. Basically, investors are matched with borrowers based on a combination of risk, type and size of investment, and offered return. Hope this helps.
I was reading my Forbes magazine today and found a great resource article for your friend.

This reminds me a lot of that ebay type loan site. Things like this are good as long as there isn’t compounded interest.
